Warehouse Management Checklist This Warehouse Management Checklist will be helpful for warehouse personnel involved in managing, counting and locating stock items. It provides a range of tasks to reach effective warehousing. All the tasks are divided into groups such as Space, Stock Items, Counting, Staff, others.

  1. Space.
    • Be sure your warehouse space is allocated efficiently so that your personnel can cope with peak loads.
    • Have some spare storage capacity available as a contingency to cater for expansion.
    • Monitor and evaluate space usage to avoid wasted or excess space.
    • Divide your warehouse space into segments to keep raw materials, goods and finished goods appropriately.
  2. Stock Items.
    • Identify fast moving items accurately and be sure they are conveniently located for efficient handling and transportation.
    • Trail stock items to all relevant storage locations.
    • Be sure that all items are used in rotation, so that you avoid the buildup of older or outdated items.
    • Locate stock items in the way that ensures sufficient space between storage locations, so that warehouse personnel can easily access any necessary place within the warehouse area.
    • Be sure that packaging, storage and handling procedures and techniques are adequate to protect goods from damage and deterioration.
    • Keep damaged items promptly identified and reallocated appropriately.
    • Be sure that hazardous and delicate items are properly stored.
  3. Counting.
    • Review all available inventories and be sure that every item is tagged with a part number on a brightly colored piece of paper.
    • Place special quality marks on all sealed packages to show how many items are packaged in every single crate or pallet.
    • Count all partial packages and mark the quantity on their sides.
    • Use labels "Do Not Inventory" for all stock items that shouldn’t be included in the physical inventory count.
    • Be sure that all items received during the physical daily count are separated and marked with tags "Do Not Inventory".
    • Allow no shipment for the duration of the physical count.
    • Be sure that all outside storage locations are counted.
    • Forward all shipping and receiving documentation to the accounting department as soon as the daily count is finished.
  4. Safety& Security.
    • Provide and maintain appropriate environmental conditions (air conditioning, humidity, and temperature).
    • Ensure that all storage areas are provided with fire safety and security systems.
    • Be sure that the systems operate well and are regularly tested for effectiveness to protect personnel and stock items.
    • Install and regularly test intruder alarm systems.
    • Provide and test containment facilities.
    • Develop a list of prevention actions to avoid staff pilferage.
  5. Staff.
    • Determine staffing requirements for your warehouse.
    • Be sure that the warehouse is provided with all adequate staff required to meet operational demands.
    • Train your personnel in following handling, safety and security procedures.
    • Provide your employees with adequate and suitable protective equipment and clothing.
    • Measure effectiveness of your personnel to ensure they handle, stack and locate stock items properly.
    • Be sure that sufficient facilities are provided for moving heavy items and that your employees are aware of the correct use of those facilities.
    • Instruct your personnel in adequate handling and storing of delicate and hazardous items.
  6. Process Improvement.
    • Use a warehouse management system to speed up the process of putting inventories away from the dock to right stock locations and to streamline the receipt of those items.
    • Double check available inventories to avoid miscalculation and bottlenecks due to stock inaccuracy.
