A Year Before

  • Start imagining the wedding
  • Decide on the budget
  • Define what kind of huppah you want, long and symbolic or short and sentimental
  • Define whether you want to include all traditions and rituals or just the lightest ones
  • Think about the date of wedding

Remember that according to Orthodox Judaism the wedding is forbidden from the sundown of Friday till the sundown of Saturday, on such holy days like Yom Kippur and Rosh-Hashanah and the period between Passover and Shavuot except the Lag-ba-Omer day

  • Think about location

Whether it will be a synagogue or secular place, indoor or outdoor

  • Decide whether you want kosher or light kosher meal or other kosher-style
  • Start looking for vendors

Look for musicians, caterers, photographer, etc. Make appointments to look at their previous work

  • Decide what kind of music do you want
  • Clear up your musicians repertoire in accordance with your wishes

Define whether they play 'Hava Nagila' and other classic Jewish songs

  • Start choosing the rabbi who will suit you

9-11 Months Before

  • Meet with your rabbi

Discuss the structure and your requirements of the weeding, what elements of Jewish traditions you want to include, etc

  • Clear up any dress requirements for bride and groom
  • Start creating a guest list
  • Start creating a request list from your parents

6-8 Months Before

  • Decide what kind of Ketubah you want
  • Look for the Ketubah artist if you want it to be specially designed
  • Prepare Ketubah text, consult with your rabbi, if necessary
  • Start selecting the gown
  • Finalize your list of guests
  • Book the band, calligrapher ...
